Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

An increase in the greenhouse effect has consequences for the world’s climate situation. Food production is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. In order to minimize the greenhouse gas emissions, the focus of the project has been on a restructuring of the agriculture in Europe. Based on linear programming two models are constructed, which are designed to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. The two models have taken into account that the current food production must stay unchanged and that no further agricultural land is taken into use. The models have been based on two different methods for the calculation of CO2-emissions from agricultural production. The small model reached a reduction of 27 %, while the large model reached a reduction of 13%. Both models showed a decrease in agricultural land use. The main source of reduction came from a restructuring of the potato production. There are considerable uncertainties linked to the result, due to lacking data for the greenhouse gas emissions from the crops. Factors such as growth conditions and alternative sources of emissions are not included in the model. Therefore the models final solution is to be taken with significant reservations. The models solution is an example that shows how a restructuring can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
