Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

In the last couple of years there has been a tremendous focus on radicalization and how this process can lead to violent actions, from a well-integrated citizen, towards the society he or she has been raised in. This paper will focus on radicalization, the process behind and what relevant solutions there are in handling this problem. This will be explored through the study of both a autobiography and two qualitative interviews. Muhammad Ali Hee, who wrote the autobiography “Afhopperen - seks år i Hizb-ut-Tahrir” will be used to enlighten his knowledge of Hizb ut-Tahrir and his experiences as a former radicalized individual. This will be compared in a theme centered analysis with the qualitative interview with Alexander Behrang Keshtkar, who was a violent individual in a radical environment. The different theories used in the analysis are the Social Movement- and Framing Theory, which show the importance of the social context and how it will affect a susceptible individual and its movements in the society. Moreover we have used Axel Honneth’s (2003) theory about acknowledgement, as a view on the individual’s mental processes. The qualitative interview with Tobias Gemmerli, an expert on online radicalization, focuses on his opinion on radicalization, which we use as a supplement to the theory. Furthermore he also gives his point of view on relevant solutions on the phenomenon. Both the document analysis and the interview with Alexander focus on the individual’s way out of the radicalization. Alexander got help from a role model and Muhammad experienced that Hizb ut-Tahrir’s way to interpret Islam was not the only one. Finally, we can identify some of the factors there may lead to radicalization; the lack of acknowledgment, a personal crisis which can be turned into a grievance towards the society, which can make the individual open towards alternative interpretations of society. We can in the work towards a solution of this problem conclude that; a mentor role and a separation of the environment can lead to a dis-radicalization of the individual. Also a reflection of the use of rhetoric can help in minimizing the feeling of being isolated from the rest of the society.
