The following project will discuss in depth about the term racism in contemporary art. The works that we have analysed and in- terpreted in this project are: The picture book with text Jungle by Christina Hagen, and the Netflix-produced series Dear White People created and instructed by Justin Simien. Besides the works by Hagen and Simien, a detailed presentation of racism as a term, interpretation theory (especially Hypothetical intuitionalism) and the moral methods consistency, moral intuitions and universalism will also be included in the project.
These contents will serve as a theoretical background for the analysis of Jungle and Dear White People, and the discussion of the moral use of racism in artworks. With the before mentioned empirical content, we will try to successfully answer our prepared problem statement that states as follows “In which way can Jungle by Christina Hagen and Dear White People by Justin Simien be interpreted? And what is morally acceptable to create as an artist when your artwork is affected by racism. What kind of criticism is expressed in the reception of the two artworks? Hypothetical intentionalism states that an artwork can be interpreted in many different ways.
The postulated author can be ascribed many different intentions to his or her artwork. In this project, we have evaluated differ- ent intentions from Jungle and Dear White People, and chosen the intentions that we mean gives the artwork the most valuable assessment. We can further conclude that the use of racism as a tool, which does not have
a valuable effect on the elimination of racism as a concept, is morally wrong, and we have established that a creator’s cultural background plays a part when one creates an artwork that touches racism.
The final conclusion we make in this project is that the criticism of Dear White People we include in this project is based on a morally wrong presumption, and should therefore be reconsidered. The criticism of Jungle is on the other hand judicious, and should be ascribed with a morally correct viewpoint.
