This project examines how Greenland can use EU in promoting their independency. This is done by examening the countrys ecoonomic and legal opputunities for inderpendency and afterwards examining whether EU can have a positive role on the in the areas where Greenland is preventet from becomming independent. This leads to the problem of the thesis.:
How is the economic and legal situation in Greenland in relation to the possibility of independence, and how can EU help Greenland in the proces of becoming independent?
To investigate this three areas of theory is applyed; 1) the sovereign state, 2) the postcolonial state and 3) para diplomacy. These are used in examining the country’s economic and legal possibilities for independency. They are furthermore used to see how Greenland uses EU in promoting inderpendency.
Furthermore are document analysis and interviews used. The head of mission in Greenlands representation in Bruxelles and the secretary of embassy for Actic and Trade at the Permanent Representation of Denmark at the EU were interviewed.
Based on the analysis of the economic of the country it can be concluded, that it is not possible, at the time being, for Greenland to become independent. Greenland depends on grants from Denmark and EU and has generally problems with economy. The proces of becoming independent is therefore a long proces and the country must rely on Denmark and EU.
EU can, however, support Greenlands proces in becoming independent, because of Greenlands access to financial possibilities, but also because of agreements beweeen the two, which they build on the day Greenland is independent.
