Professionskrisen i velfærdssamfundet: The Welfare Society and the Crisis of the Professions

Abstrakt

In this master dissertation we have examined the question: Which strate-gies can be developed in order to recruit and trainee qualified nurses for the Danish healthcare sector. We have, with inspiration from Critical Theory and Pierre Bourdieus Re-flective Sociology (Bourdieu and Wacquant 1996); considered and used the newest Danish research on professionals in the public sector, and on organisational theory. We have considered and used a large desk re-search, carried out a number of interviews and arranged a Future-workshop with selected stakeholders from the field, in order to establish an empirical foundation. The method is built on the idea about The Socio-logical Imagination (Mills 2002, Andersen and Hovgaard 2007), and our aim is to sketch strategically and action orientated suggestions. Mathiesen and Højbjerg (2004) recommend a model for sociological ana-lyze in the field, which we have used and limited, concerning tree levels: a central policy level, a professional and practical level and an educational level. At the central policy level we have pointed out the need of a higher focus on ethics and social values about the professional work in the Danish pub-lic sector, including a management with higher focus on democratic values and acknowledgement of professional competences. At the professional and practical level we have suggested improvement for the professionals working conditions, to obtain an attractive public and healthcare sector and health sector. The neoliberal political rhetoric about the welfare society doesn’t agree with the facts and the finances grant to the public sector on the one side, and the expectation’s of the citizens is therefore not tally with, the fact and possibilities in the health care sector on the other side. At the educational level, with programmes and training, it will be crucial that the institutions are more adjusted to the young generations, if the negative intake shall turn to a better and suitable level. The institutions and the programmes have to be more social and cultural inclusive in order to bee attractive to obtain new groups of young people to the profession.
