This paper examines the link between the medical condition stress and the achievement-oriented society in present day Denmark. Based primarily on the book “Præstationssamfundet” by Anders Petersen and various works examining the issue of the medical condition stress by Svend Brinkmann, the paper briefly maps out stress as a societal issue, as well as a personal one through the last decades, and how the rise in cases of stress might be linked to the achievement-oriented society. Through Andersen and Brinkmann, as well as the theories of Aaron Antonovsky on Sense of Coherence, Anthony Giddens on Individualization in the Modern Society and Lisbeth F. Brudal on Positive Psychology, the paper analyses three qualitative interviews; an expert on stress and two individuals who have previously suffered from stress. The analysis serves to either confirm or dismiss a link between how certain individuals experiences stress and the achievement-oriented society. The paper makes use of philosophical hermeneutics, that, rather than looking for the right answer, seeks to confirm or deny preconceptions. Following the analysis is a brief discussion seeking to answer if the stressed individuals are experiencing a connection between their condition and the present day societal norms and expectations on individual responsibility.
The paper concludes that there is a link between certain individuals experience of the medical condition stress and the achievement-oriented society, but that there is not enough literature on the subject to support a direct link between the achievement-oriented society and the rising number in cases of stress. It is concluded, that the medical condition stress is not a new phenomenon, and that it is not possible within the span of this paper to determine, whether we are more stressed now than ever, or if it is a result of pathologization, or something entirely different. It is lastly concluded, that the achievement-oriented society has some responsibility regarding the rising number in cases of stress in present day Denmark.
