Abstrakt

To investigate to what extent the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 affected the Saudi-Iranian power struggle, a hypothesis that; the invasion profoundly affected the power struggle is formulated. Positivist epistemology, constructionist ontology and a comparative research design will be used. In order to deductively test the hypothesis different theories of international relations are employed to secondary qualitative sources: Realism, Constructivism and the Identity-Dilemma. To support the theory, concepts related to power, authority, legitimacy and power relations in IR are utilized. Different reasons for the exacerbation of the power struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran are explored, such as the Islamic Revolution, the Iran-Iraq war and the Gulf wars. Investigating the consequences of the American invasion of Iraq, for the power structures in the Persian Gulf is relevant since it enchases our understanding of the effect of outside great power intervention in local state systems. It is concluded that the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 dramatically affected the power struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran by exacerbating it. However, the invasion did not change the power struggle profoundly, since it did not change the structures between the two powers, in place since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
