Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Abstrakt

The project aims to determine how Århus Universitetshospital and the consultant have handled the crisis related to the documentary called ”Pigen der ikke ville dø” and to evaluate eventual improvements. A focus group, a press release and several articles are the empirical data, which we analyse by the means of W. Timothy Coombs and William L. Benoit’s theories of crisis communication. The former deals with the strategic aspect of the field and the latter with the rhetorical. Finally we compare the theory with practice by taking our focus group into consideration, which form the foundation of a reflection of the project including a criticism of Coombs’ theory. The project concludes that the consultant did not react verbally on the crisis and therefore has handled the crisis poorly. To improve the handling she should have apologised in public. Regarding Århus Universitetshospital it was difficult to determine the handling. The theory concludes that the hospital reacted perfectly on the crisis, whereas our focus group showed that the evaluation was more complex.
