Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

In the summer of 2014 racks for containing pant were installed on the garbage bins in Co-penhagen. This project thus seeks to describe, analyze and discuss these new pant-racks’ function, this both in their visible and more symbolic form. The pant-rack is an initiative, which started on Vesterbro as a collaboration between the Municipality of Copenhagen and the group of social entrepreneurs KBHpant. The initiative aims to increase the dignity of the people who collect pant in the streets of Copenhagen, as they will no longer be forced to search through the city’s garbage bins to locate the pant. In order to gain more knowledge about the challenges that have laid before the cooperation between KBHpant and Teknik- og Miljøforvaltningen, as well as examine social entrepreneurs and the Municipality of Copen-hagen’s ability to act, self-collected empirical data has been thoroughly processed. The project begins with outlining the key elements of the field, which forms the base of our knowledge. In addition it will be examined how organizations act to help realize the pant-racks and also how the pant-racks can be seen as an expression of a different way of planning, than the one usually practiced within the Municipality of Copenhagen. To enlighten this the project will draw upon David Harvey and Henri Lefebvre’s reflections on the right to the city, Peter Marcuse’s three-stepped urban planning strategy and Erving Goffman’s theory on stigma. Ultimately the pant-racks’ potential of change in the city will be discussed from a material and symbolic point of view, since the bottle-collectors can be viewed in terms of its social, economic and sustainable value. The project finally concludes how the pant-rack initi-ative enables a stigmatized group to influence the way the city is planned, and therefore we conclude that it is an example of a successful attempt to plan for the ‘greater good’.
