Abstract In the following paper we have tried to illuminate how the association “Outsideren” creates possibilities and limitations for its volunteers and further on we have tried to illuminate how the association affect their future possibilities. Outsideren is a place for people who deals with some sort of mental vulnerability and who has experience with the psychiatry system. The volunteers publish a magazine every second month in which they discuss this experience. To answer our research question we have performed qualitative interviews with two volunteers. The interviews have inspired us to divide the analysis in the following different themes: community, recognition, competences and the future. We have come to the understanding that Outsideren creates a tolerant community for its volunteers and that they get recognized and viewed as people with competences. We believe that this has contributed to the fact that our volunteers has achieved a positive understanding of themselves. In spite of this we do have a concern that there is a possibility for the volunteers to loose their positive understanding of themselves if they do not receive the same tolerant recognition outside of Outsideren.
