Following the massive protests that took place in Nicaragua throughout 2018, this project examines the different explanations that have been given in order to understand what led to the protests and how the protests were interpreted. By including studies on Nicaraguan history, the project views the conflict in a historical perspective. Furthermore, it views the conflict in the light of the theories of Boaventura de Sousa Santos. As a result, it brings a perspective of colonial, capitalist and patriarchal power structure to the interpretation of the conflict. Through analyses of a report made by Amnesty International, different views of the conflict from two American professors, and interviews made with three Nicaraguans who have in different ways been involved in the conflict, the project pictures the different narratives that exist regarding what happened. Moreover, the project will discuss these narratives through the lens of historical perspectives and power structures.
