Through a focus on verbal communication, this thesis seeks insight into the field of performance, including the characteristics of the extraordinary experience. In achieving this knowledge, we study the elements of the feeding experience as well as the overall experience in Denmark’s Aquarium; more specifically, this study is targeted at the significance of the visitor’s partial and entire experience. B. Joseph Pine II and James H. Gilmore’s model on dimensions of experiences and Lena Mossberg’s model on the entire experience are applied to investigate these experiences with the aim of comprehending the verbal communication’s contribution to creating an extraordinary experience. Via these models, we examine the partial and the entire experience with particular focus on the nature of the verbal communication during feeding sessions along with its corresponding effects. On basis of this study we argue that the verbal communication at a tourist attraction, such as Denmark’s Aquarium, is essential to the visitors’ ability to get closer to the extraordinary experience. Furthermore, the communicator’s use of storytelling is beneficial to passing on subject-specific knowledge to the less knowledgably visitor; the story frame is recognizable to most and stimulates the visitor’s visualization which ensures that the communicated content is also experienced, and hence, remembered. Based on this inferred significance of the verbal communication to an experience, we argue that the applied models display shortcomings in their dimensions and relations to characteristics of the extraordinary experience; this indicates that communication has a larger and more important role in the development of experiences than implied by the models. Building on this analysis, we recommend guidelines that Denmark’s Aquarium can implement in the hopes of approaching the extraordinary experience at the new attraction, Den Blå Planet. These guidelines encompass both the partial and the entire experience, while primarily being focused on the role and significance of the communicator in the interaction and communication to and with the visitors.
