Non-existing or misunderstood non-verbal performative cues by laptop musicians in a concert setting, resulting in missing visual communication, is not a new problem. Collected theory and ethnographic fieldwork, such as observations and interviews, is used in an overview and further definition of the problem and the parties involved – improvising laptop-musicians and their audience. This report describes our process of using design science, specifically Soft Design Science Methodology, to design a possible solution by way of a consumer-grade EEG-headset and a visualization of the musician’s measured brain wave activity.
