The aim of this study is to provide a detailed analysis of the capitalist productive systems’ confrontation with the material boundaries .This will be done firstly though a rigorous and detailed analysis of the economic understanding of capitalism, as provided by Smith, Marx, Wallerstein and Keynes. From this analysis we will provide a workable definition of capitalism and its dynamics. Secondly, we will provide the analytical tools needed to understand the workings of the material boundaries upon our economy – mainly derived from “The Limits to Growth” report. To detail the problems of finite resources, we will examine the peaking of world oil production, Peak Oil, and what consequences it might have for our economies. Finally, we conclude that we have exceeded the carrying capacity of our planet, and that capitalism, which is dependent on growth, must cease to exist as it will only worsen our predicament.
