Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Abstrakt

The purpose of this assignment has been to investigate whether the responsibility of evil lies with the individual or society. The approach has been to find and study different philosophers over time from Plato to Adam Morton in order to get a varied picture of how they have viewed this question. We have studied and interpreted Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and applied these philosophical theories, as this work has been used to exemplify the evil that we as human beings witness in our lives. In order to focus on the themes and symbols in the novel we have also conducted a literary analysis. Because of society’s influence on the individual and the individual’s choice to act however he/she likes, we have come to find that both society and the individual hold part of the responsibility. Society holds the responsibility of raising and helping the individual to do good and avoid acts of evil, while the individual holds the responsibility to mind other people and try not to hurt them. Ultimately, however, the responsibility lies with the individual.
