Abstract This paper investigates the subject of evil on the basis of Josef Fritzl. The focus will be on different types of evil and how they define the individual’s personality as well as its actions. Furthermore it examines the childhood and upbringing of Josef Fritzl and the impact that it might have had on his actions and crimes later in life. Through an analysis of different psychological and philosophical theorists such as Sigmund Freud, Alice Miller and Lars Svendsen, it studies his mentality and immoral actions towards his daughter Elisabeth Fritzl. Through various views it is discussed whether or not one can define Josef Fritzl’s actions as a result of his traumatic and loveless childhood or if they are biological and therefore congenital. The study indicates that the trauma that occurred in Josef Fritzls upbringing has indeed had a great impact on his crimes later in life, but it also indicates that there have most likely been some sort of biological issue which have evolved during his childhood. His actions towards his family and women in general indicates that the actions have been well considered and with the intention of doing something evil towards another person due to the intent and execution of the crimes.
