The purpose of this paper is to examine how important child care is for the child, and how it is expressed in the relationship between children and pedagogues, based on an observation in a Danish daycare institution. This paper utilizes theories thought out by Daniel Stern, John Bowlby and Knud Ejler Løgstrup to examine the importance of the child’s development from a psychological and philosophical point of view to determine, whether pedagogues can function as a potential primary caretaker. In order to examine this, this paper uses an observation as a methodological approach to provide a better understanding of the phenomena. This paper focuses on examining a series of events in the observation, which seemed the most obvious in relation to the interaction between children and pedagogues. This paper then argues the significance of the child’s early development and how trust also is a significant factor in the child’s development. Finally, this paper discusses whether the role as the child’s primary caretaker effectively can be taken by other people, such as a pedagogue, and how trust, in relation to the pedagogue, can be utilized as a power tool against children. This paper concludes that the infant’s earliest days has a lot of impact on its development and that neglection of the child in this state can cause some consequences, which can affect the child for the rest of his/her days. However, this neglection can also be restored through caring relations with others, and what was once lost in the development in the early childhood can be reestablished later in life. In addition, from a philosophical point of view, child care seems to depend on the trust between the child and the caretaker, and even though any individual potentially can function as a primary caretaker, a certain amount of trust and intersubjectivity must be established beforehand, as trust seems to work as a foundation for the caring of others
