Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project studies how a hegemonic masculinity is being constructed, through cinematic tools, within the motion picture ‘The Riot Club’ (2014). The chosen theory is of help to understand the concept of ‘hegemonic masculinity’, as well as to understand the processes that sustain it within the film. In order to make sense of the cinematic construction of this hegemonic masculinity, a formalist analysis is conducted, followed by a thorough scrutiny of the findings. This analysis delineates what this hegemonic masculinity looks like, how the members of the club are trying to achieve it, and the consequences of this struggle. The conclusion is followed by a discussion, which considers the possible consequences this motion picture, and more broadly media, can have on the audience’s view on, and possibly enactment of, masculinity.
