Om skabelsen af det moderniserede universets studerende: En Foucault-inspireret analyse

Abstrakt

Drawing on analyses of the modernization of the public sector in Denmark, this paper examines different power- and selftechnologies, through which university students are made subjects. Initially, the influence of the modernization of the public sector on Danish universities is ana-lyzed. It is argued that the process of modernizing the public sector has manifested the purpose of universityeducation as that of solely contributing to society through growth, productivity and wealth. The paper thoroughly unfolds and discusses relevant epistemological assumptions and analytical concepts of Michel Foucault, and draw on this theoretical background in analyzing the subjectivation of universitystudents through six different technologies: the Study Progress Re-form, the ECTS-system, the master-thesis-contract, the Mahara-portfolio, the CV-check and the studycoursedescription. The first three technologies allow an intensified control of the university student’s time management. The last three technologies unnoticed make the subject capable of controlling him- or herself, thus tying the subject to its own identity. Finally, the conclusions of the analyses are summarized, and it is discussed if and how the paper is to be read as a critique of the welfare-state, and wherein the critical potential Foucault-inspired analyses consists. Firstly, it is argued that the welfare-state is to be credited to the ex-tent that it promotes diversity, while it is to be criticised to the extent that it draws on subtle tech-niques in homogenizing its citizens. Secondly, it is argued that it is in the hands of the reader to decide if and how he or she will make use the presented analyses: we do not wish to replace the normativity of the modernized university with another normative ideal.
