Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project is based on the speech Oration on the Dignity of Man by the renaissance philosopher Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, whose work and thoughts have shown to be of great significance throughout history. The speech is considered to be one of the most important literary creations of its time, and we have found the term The Dignity of Man to be a substantial part of the present charter of fundamental rights of the European Union. This project reveals how philosophical thoughts and religious conflicts in the past, in comparison with current conflicts related to the European project, can result in a desire for peace, which in this particular project is expressed by Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and the former French Prime Minister Jacque Chirac. A reading of Oration on the Dignity of Man within its historical context has led to an understanding of a long tradition, the hermetic tradition, and its impact on how we consider the dignity of human beings today. Furthermore the project shows how the humanistic view on human beings has challenged the Christian view, and in some cases still does - especially when taking a closer look on the debate concerning the preamble of the European constitution.
