Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Since different technologies and industries begun to develop the oil pollution of the marine environment has always been a problem of a great concern. Due to various properties oils can affect the surrounding in many different ways, leading to a huge damage of the biota. The scientific research has been done and the boundaries of innocuous oil amounts in the marine environment were established. However, accidental oil spills from the boats can exceed these amounts. For that reason, with the help of the gas chromatography method, an attempt was done to answer the question: “How serious is the oil pollution in the Roskilde harbour, in Denmark”. Throughout the investigation it has been found that in the harbour the oil pollution was exceeding the innocuous concentrations. However, during the investigation some difficulties were met and for various reasons discussed in the report the results of the experiment cannot be considered as valid results. Moreover, due to lack of time the results cannot give a direct answer to the research question and can only be seen as a crude estimation. In spite of that, the report can give a deep insight to the use of the gas chromatography technique when dealing with similar problems.
