Julie Buhl Jørgensen

Studenteropgave: Speciale

The master thesis is an investigation of the production of news articles on three online newspaper sites; bt.dk, politiken.dk and information.dk, and that of their respective paper-format newspapers. The master thesis takes point of departure in the coverage of the terror attack in Norway on July 22nd, 2011, and investigates the coverage of the event through the online news sites versus their respective newspaper format. The integration of interactivity, multimediality and hypertextuality is investigated, and a discussion of whether the Internet’s potential is fully utilized by the three newspaper’s online news sites is conducted. The master thesis looks into the circumstances under which news is produced at each respective newspaper, and an analysis of whether these circumstances have had an impact on each of the newspapers’ coverage of the terror attack. Much emphasis is given to the Internet relative to journalism, and many researchers point to that the Internet is one of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing journalism at present. Online-journalism is often criticized for lacking depth in its coverage and the justification of this criticism is discussed. The master thesis is an empirical investigation of all the articles that were produced in the days following the terror attack on bt.dk, politiken.dk and information.dk, as well as all the articles that were brought in the paper format of the respective newspapers. A discussion of whether these three newspaper companies position their coverage relative to each other, and to which extent the readers receive an alternative coverage of the terror attack through reading the online version versus the newspaper format. The master thesis is an investigation of two different platforms for journalistic communication of news; namely an online and a newspaper format, and the objective of the thesis is to assess which advantages and disadvantages there are from these two platforms. Furthermore, the objective is to discuss the ways in which these two platforms can contribute to different perspectives on journalism in a boarder context.
