The following thesis examines the concept of the aesthetic phenomenon atmosphere. In the thesis, it is questioned what atmosphere as a concept consists of, and how it is possible to describe and research which aspects influence the feeling and understanding of atmospheres. Atmospheres are investigated and understood as part of an aesthetic relation between subject and object, in which the world and its phenomena’s are perceived through a sensory understanding of ‘the World’. Thereby, atmosphere is seen in the light of a phenomenological approach, and is researched through a theoretical examination primarily using theories by Gernot Böhme and of interior design. Interior design is seen as a constituent part of a given atmosphere. It is examined using two cases, Höst and La Glace, which are utilised in order to shed light on why an atmosphere is felt as it is, and which understandings and interpretations influence this perception. Lastly, it is discussed how the rising experience economy influences businesses use of atmosphere’s as an attraction.
