Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project intends to examine the phenomena nudging and how it can be used to empower citizens. As we intend to uncover the techniques and the rationality of government it is necessary to perform an analysis of government. The book Nudge by Thaler and Sunstein will serve as empirical data. Furthermore we will examine the possibilities as well as limitations with regards to the empowerment of citizens through nudging. The project ‘Fra patient til borger’ by Hospitalsenheden Horsens will help serve this purpose. We will conclude that nudging’s techniques of government is based upon an indirect form of governing. It influences individuals into making the decision that is in their best interest, as judged by themselves. The rationality of government draws upon paternalism and liberalism. Therefore it focuses on the fact that people benefit from being governed as well as the preservation of the freedom to choose. Nudging perceives individuals as Humans, which is a limitation of nudging’s ability to empower. However there are some parts of the techniques that serve a more communicative purpose and these are more useful regarding empowerment of citizens.
