Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

Purpose: There is a problem with loneliness among elderly people in nursing homes. In our design we want to make elderly people in nursing homes come together. In this we want to help the elderly people with their loneliness and thereby improve the quality of their everyday life. Design: Our design is supposed to be a place, which has the purpose of giving residents in nursing homes a better opportunity to interact socially. This design, we have chosen to call “The Nostalgia Corner”. This includes the use of several tools such as reminiscence and the application of colors. Methods: In our investigation of the needs of nursing home residents, we interview residents and staff of nursing homes. In doing so, we incorporate theories of the structured interview (Bryman 2008). The research of the needs of elderly citizens, however, creates some complications in the application of these interviews. These complications are in this case; misinterpreting answers given from elders who are hard of hearing, and elders with little or poor eyesight. Another critical aspect in the methods applied in our design, is the lack of testing on a specific nursing home. Instead, we create a mock-up in 1:1 size, wherein we as the designers try to overtake the roles of the interesting party; being the elderly. Findings: The problem of loneliness among nursing home residents creates specific demands for the structuring of nursing homes, which we try to meet in our design. In doing so we find that color, lighting, the concept of home, and reminiscing old memories play an important role in the quality of the everyday life among the elderly. Conclusion: Our design tries to enhance the quality of nursing home residents everyday life. This purpose is done by creating a common platform for the residents to interact with each other, as we have found, that the residents have a lack of social interaction amongst other residents. Social relations create better quality of everyday life, among nursing home residents. Furthermore the ability of transferring the home to the nursing home, play an important part of the residents quality of everyday life. In our design we meet these criteria with artefacts, that implies reminiscence. In our design we find that colour and lighting can change the overall atmosphere of the institutional space.
