Over the past decade, the world has been fascinated with neo-noir cinema and art produced in Scandinavia, which is described by the term “Nordic noir”. In this essay we explore whether such term is only based on location or is a genre on its own. By only focusing on Danish cinema and art we provide certain consistency which makes it easier to discover the very main features of Nordic noir. In addition, we go even further by trying to find out if some of those features are strictly Danish, which could lead to expansion of the term and discovering more subgenres of it. Another topic of interest is the development of one of the most common tropes in classic film-noir – the femme fatale and if it is the correct term to use when talking about Nordic noir.
