The following report is a qualitative content analysis investigating the portrayals of masculinity in the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico. Based on knowledge of the current and historical context of the drug conflict in Mexico, as well as existing theories and concepts about masculinity, particularly hegemonic masculinity, hypermasculinity and machismo, key scenes and dialogue in the series were analyzed to determine, through the identification of themes, whether there is a specific narco-masculinity - and if so, how this concept can be defined. The findings indicate that such a concept does exist and is defined by multiple factors, partly relating to explanations of masculinity in previous research and partly to the realities of the narco-culture and social structures that exist in Mexico. Overall, the report is an attempt to explore a more unusual aspect of masculinity, but that still affects many lives through violence and deadly consequences, and is represented to various audiences through this fictional series.
