Project title: When voters flee A study of the decline in the Danish Social Democratic voters Abstract: This study examines the decline in Social Democratic voters since the election in 2011, and the possibility of turning the tide. On the basis of an in-depth interview study with former Social Democratic voters, the study focuses on determining the underlying causes of the voters fleeing the party. By means of relevant theories and terms from, amongst others, Laclau & Mouffe, the issues regarding the identity of the Social Democratic Party and the discourse concerning breaking promises are subject for analysis. Furthermore, short term, as well as long term, suggested solutions to the given issues, are discussed and presented. The study shows that unclear communication and an antiquated discourse from the party’s part are contributing factors in the occurrence of divergence between the voters expectations and the party’s political actions, which leads to a confusion of the party’s identity. The solution to the problem seems to involve a change of discourse surrounding the party and a redefinition of the Social Democratic political project.
