This master thesis examines how young songwriters express themselves in their songs and how they interact through and around their songs in Sangskriverværkstedet (The Songwriters Workshop) which is a 4 month course for 15-25 year olds. I, the author of this thesis, have developed The Songwriters Workshop and conducted it 3 times since February 2017.
The empirical data for the master thesis consists of two group interviews with respectively 3 songwriters and 2 songwriters who all attended the course, 5 songs written by the attendees in the interviews and my own experiences from the courses.
The master thesis uses Christopher Small’s musicking-theory to analyse The Songwriters Workshop as a musical performance. The analysis shows that the young songwriters feel safe in giving and receiving feedback in The Songwriters Workshop along with sharing their songs with each other, even though it can still be challenging – especially in the beginning of the course. The 5 songs all have certain connections to the songwriters’ emotional life and this sets the stage for their interaction, where they often present thoughts from their personal life and their backstage-identity. In The Songwriters Workshop the participants feel they have an opportunity to enter into a new musical role, where the focus is on their expression of a song, and not on what technical level they play an instrument.
The thesis furthermore uses Simon Frith’s theory of song words in performance to analyse what the songwriters express in their songs. The analysis shows that
the songs are all more or less based on personal experiences and emotions regarding self-understanding, self-care and/or relationships, but vary a lot in their musical and lyrical expression.
Finally, the thesis uses Philip Auslander’s Performance Analysis and Popular Musicians: A Manifesto to discuss the songwriters as performers in popular music. The discussion finds The Songwriters Workshop as a test arena, where the participants can develop their performance personas in collaboration with each other, before they eventually enter the professional musical arena after the course.
