This dissertation deals with poems written specifically for selected old paintings. During the winter of 2012 I have carried out the exhibition “When Words Take over the Paintings” in the art museum The Hirschsprung Collection. I have written poems for a selected number of the paintings in the collection and for four months the poems have been displayed in front of the old paintings. However, I have not solely focused on writing poems. The chief aim has been to investigate in what ways the visitors approach the paintings as well as their reactions when they are met with poems in front of the painting. This dissertation is the result of these investigations. For two months I have observed visitors and spoken to the employees at The Hirschsprung Collection. In that way, I have met many different approaches to the paintings and on that basis I have tried to display some of the manifold experiences which older naturalistic paintings can bring off, and not the least what experiences the poems have been able to initiate.
