In Denmark there is a special law of integration process, which every refugee and immigrant has to follow to obtain social support. Since the Government election in 2015, there has been a lot of regulations within this area. Regulations, which I will stress has resulted in inequality between this minority and the majority group has become bigger. There has not been enough academical research combining the topics of refugees, integration and recognition and even less when it comes to experiences from refugees themselves. I therefore see a great importance for this study, combining Cultural Studies and Social Psychology. This leads me to following research questions: What significance has the experience of recognition towards refugees’ involvement in the municipal integration program? – and how does the Danish integration system and alternative communities set the framework for refugees regarding the experience of recognition. The questions are sought answered through critical theory research combining two field of empirical material, making out a two-part analysis. First the law of integration, and secondly narratives collected by interviews with five refugees. Refugees who have obtained residency within the last 3½ years. The second analysis is the one contributing the most towards new knowledge, because of its uniqueness. The first analysis though, is of great importance for the second one, because of the importance of its critical view upon the system within the viewpoint of Recognition Theory. The analysis theory is mainly based on The Struggle for Recognition: Moral Grammar of Social Conflicts, by Axel Honneth (2006). The methodological theory is mainly based on The Life Story Interview, by Robert Atkinson (1998). The thesis concludes that the integration law, especially the regulations and the integration program, combined with the low wage of social support are restricting the refugees in social life and economic integration processes. The lack of recognition through the framework of the integration system does not prevent the refugees in following the integration program, because of the need of income. Alternative communities as volunteers and other kurdish people, has proven to be of great importance to the interviewees. Both to obtain the experience of recognition and because it has shown a positive influence on their involvement in the integrationsprogram. The study furthermore found need of more research, looking into the internship procedures in the municipalities. This is due to the fact that the interviewees are expressing the feeling of being ”stuck” while doing internship. It is shown that even after 9 months of internship, they are still not obtaining a regular job.
