This project examines how two specific posts on Facebook written by Danish members of Parliament Inger Støjberg (V) and Özlem Cekic (SF) are developed with the intention of including news criteria. Furthermore it examines which consequences this rather new practice of politicians using Facebook posts as a channel for their political messages have on the journalistic work process. Finally it discusses which influence the mediatization of politics has on the professional relationship between politicians and journalists. To study the abovementioned we find our theoretical stand in Danish media researcher Stig Hjarvard’s theory regarding the mediatization of politics and society in general. We also employ the three media metaphors developed by American professor of communications Joshua Meyrowitz. These primarily serve to nuance our understanding of media. We conduct two qualitative interviews with journalists from Danish media institutions Ekstra Bladet and Politiken. These are specifically selected since Ekstra Bladet represent the tabloid press and Politiken represent the omnibus press in a Danish understanding of media. The project contains a comparative case study of the posts on Facebook made by Danish politicians Støjberg and Cekic on which we apply a rhetorical analysis. The posts can be compared in a number of ways whereas the most obvious thing they have in common is that they both have generated several articles across the broad Danish news media. Based on the rhetorical analysis and the qualitative interviews we conclude that the politicians use posts on Facebook in a strategic matter. The analysis shows that both Støjberg’s and Cekic’ posts contain several of the five traditional news criteria. Additionally we find that the politicians use of Facebook as a channel for political messages have caused a change in the journalistic work process, which we think have consequences on the credibility of news regarding politics. Finally we conclude that the mediatization of politics have influence on the professional relationship between politicians and journalists. If the politicians master Facebook and its options they have the opportunity to avoid the critical filter of journalists. Therefore they have prerequisites to gain control of the flow of communication before journalistic interference.
