Myter om mødomme - At miste sin mødom til ingenting

Nathalie Elaine Nedergaard & Camilla Rullhøj Poulsen

Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

The project examines notions of hymens from a poststructuralist view where different notions of hymens are constructed in discourses and are ascribed notions of virginity. These different notions of hymens are in the Danish language concretized by the words mødom, jomfruhinde and kønskrans. The investigation uses theory by some of the great poststructuralist thinkers, including Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, and Judith Butler. Furthermore the project examines notions of hymens in a specific situation of social interaction consisting of a group interview with four young women which forms the empiric data of the project. The project concludes notions of hymens are part of a discursive battle to obtain hegemonic status. Furthermore the project concludes that the notion of the hymen which in the project is represented by the Danish word kønskrans can be seen as an attempt to conceptualize and articulate the absence of the hymen understood as something that is broken the first time a female has sex.
