This project examines how Danish fossil-free energy consumption can help to achieve an absolute decoupling of CO2 emissions and a continued growth in Denmark. The problem is analyzed from the Climate Commission report Green growth - the path towards a Danish energy consumption without fossil fuels, a vision on how Denmark can become free of fossil fuels in 2050. Opportunities for Cleantech are analyzed as it is considered a key part of such an absolute decoupling suggested in the Climate Commission report. Based on the reports premise of a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, it is problematised that CO2 emissions from Danish import as well as bunkering of ships and aircraft are not included in the Commissions calculations. By extension, an inventory of Danish CO2 emissions is made, as well as projections of how a decoupling would look like if these emissions are included, is carried out in respectively a baseline- and an ambitious scenario. Finally, the dilemma of growth is discussed as well as alternative options for growth, especially changes and limitations in growth. The overall conclusion is that an absolute decoupling of CO2 emissions by transition to fossil-free energy consumption with continued growth in Denmark cannot happen unless the rest of the world also takes similar, very ambitious climate initiatives.
