Still more eco-villages are showing up these days, as alternative and sustainable ways to live. These intentional communities can give a new perspective of, how essential elements from the co-housing concept can be used to discuss and rethink what kind of housing and communities that are being planned and build. The eco-village does not only present solutions for a more collective and socially responsible housing, but also a more sustainable living. This thesis looks into the concept and vision of eco-villages. Furthermore it investigates one eco-village, to analyze how the citizens create a social community that encourage and promotes experiments with new sustainable solutions. Through a perspective on path-dependent systems and how it involves technologies, systems, culture and social norms, the thesis looks into and discuss, which sustainable solutions and elements from the eco-village concept that can create new ways of sustainable living practices. The thesis also looks into the sustainable intention of the community, and analyzes how some solutions fail because of dilution in the intentional practice.
Based on the key findings in the analysis, it is discussed how the sustainable form of living could be widespread in Denmark, in relation to law, public planning, culture and social norms.
The thesis concludes that the eco-village has a strong identity related to counterculture, and that the community is seemingly closed off, because it mostly focuses on benefits for the inhabitants. The conclusion also states, that the sustainable intention of this community is challenged by the everyday inconvenience families and individuals have, in relation to living sustainably in a modern world where individuals often are exposed for consumerism. This dilutes some of the inhabitants and thereby the development of solutions. Although, this form of living could be a future sustainable solution for more people, if the identity connected to this lifestyle becomes more diverse and the sustainable solutions becomes more standardized.
