Abstrakt

The following project is a study on apocalyptic culture based on the analysis and the general interpretation of the apocalyptic movies, Melancholia and Armageddon. The primary focus of this study is the characterization of both movies’ main characters and the different ideologies and varying philosophical mind-sets behind the individual films. To give the study an easier overview, we have decided to divide it into three main parts, all of which have been split into several subcategories. Part 1 is an in-depth analysis of Lars von Trier's Melancholia. It has a particular focus on narrative elements such as characters and the importance of environments. Part 2 focuses on Michael Bay's Armageddon. This part makes use of several of the same core elements as the previous part, but also focuses on contemporary trends and the Hollywood Model. Part 3 is an internal discussion regarding the movies’ individual ideologies and thoughts. We have chosen to base the discussion on research created by the renowned philosophers, Sartre and Camus, as well as the theory behind micro & macro stories. We can conclude, based on the combined analysis of part 1 & 2 as well as part 3's discussion, that Melancholia and Armageddon are based on widely different ideologies, despite their shared macro stories. Even though both films have aspects of the same apocalyptic culture, they make widely different use of their individual characters and environment, to manipulate the audience. At the end of the study, we chose to include a broad speculation based on the knowledge we have acquired throughout the research process, about the exponential rise of escapist media
