Robotics is a quickly growing field and the ability to build and program robots are increasingly relevant skills to possess. In order to learn about robots we created a wheeled robot with several sensors. The construction took place at ‘FabLab RUC’, a workshop that provides expertise and tools to the public free of charge. For the project, we limited ourselves to resources available to a regular Danish citizen. Through an integrated hardware and software development process, we examined robot programming. We used an iterative development process, building several prototypes along the way. There are complications associated with working with sensor data and actuators and several precautions need to be taken in order to ensure a robust performance. Through the development process, we gained practical experience and skills, which we can now apply to future robotics projects. We found that despite the technical difficulty associated with creating a robust robotic system, anyone with the time and drive can acquire these skills through tools and resources that are easily accessible to most Danish citizens.
