This project investigates miscommunication concerning marriages in respectively Denmark and the United States of America. Furthermore, it highlights the cultural differences between the couples examined. The chosen cases are the TV-programs Gift ved første blik and Married at First Sight. The methods used to investigate the problem are; cultural scripts, metaphors and gendered tendencies in language.
Cultural scripts are used to examine the discursive logics that people associate with. This theory is used to clarify when cultural values of the couples are deviant from each other, both in terms of the couple as a whole and the individuals in the couple.
The project will furthermore include metaphor theory. This theory establishes and outlines the definition of metaphors and how they are used in language. This is relevant to the project because it highlights the cultural differences and shows how they are evidential in the use of metaphors.
To study the miscommunication that can occur between men and women the theory of A Cultural Approach to Male-Female Miscommunication has been employed by the project group. The theory is based on the differences between men and women in speech and their different behavioral tendencies in conversation with the opposite gender. This theory has been applied to analyze the case.
The project is elevated with a discussion concerning the programs, the cultural aspect and the miscommunication as a whole. At last the thesis is completed with a conclusion that summarizes the problem.
