Title: Mental health in working life in the public health care system The object of this thesis is to study how mental health in the working life is created in the public health care system according to a group of midwives and nurses in a workshop inspired by critical utopian action research. The empirical material consists of the participants utterances produced in the workshop through the social and empowering process, discussing the conditions in both a critical and an utopian leaning, in what they believe influences a mentally healthy working life. The context of the study is the neo-liberal politics, that constitutes a New Public Management controlled health care, influencing the welfare and job satisfaction as assessed by multiple researchers, in particular because the utterances of the participants points towards the working conditions - especially bustle and lack of recognition - being the conditions influencing their mental health inappropriately. Using the theorists Thomas Ziehe and Axel Honneth, who are, respectively, cultural theorist and social philosopher, this thesis examines how this bustle and lack of recognition affects the mental health of the participants. The analysis identifies how the working conditions causes ambivalent feelings and due to an impossibility of mental rest and regression, this influences their perception of themselves since they experience this as affecting their behavior and professionalism towards the patients. The management’s lack of recognition of the participants personalities and experiential professionalism causes failure to thrive, since they experience their professionalism reduced to standardized schemes and protocols. At the same time, the part of the professionalism that excel in experience and cannot be standardized, paradoxically seems to need definitions for proper behaviour, since lack of definitions also causes frustrations. Based on the study it is concluded, that a change in the health care is needed, which embraces the possibility to regress when the individual need occurs, as well as the means to be recognized in both personal and experience based professionalism, since these changes are assessed to be health-promoting to a mentally healthy working life in health care system. #Mental health #Working life #Public health care system #Action research #Future-creating workshop #Midwives #Nurses
