The aim of this paper is to investigate the psychological significance of the significant other to the neglected pattern breaker. This is based on document analysis of the autobiography Vrede er mit mellemnavn (2011) written by Lisbeth Zornig Andersen. The focal point of the paper’s theoretical basis is the work of developmental psychological theorists such as John Bowlby and his work about attachment theory. Both Anne-Lise Løvlie Schibbye’s work regarding relationship formation and Martin Buber’s I and You theory give an insight into what it takes to create this relevant relationship with the significant other. Our analysis shows neglect of several parameters resulting in dysfunctional working models and attachment patterns which have an outcome as in this case a problematic pattern in relationships in general. We used Bowlby’s working models and patterns of attachment to analyze Lisbeth’s anger. In addition, her anger described through Peter Fonagy’s mentalization concept and her relationship style to other people has been analyzed through Schibbye’s theory. Furthermore we show through Buber’s understanding of the I-It relationship the objectification that takes place of Zornig, instead of an I-You understanding which she later had with Karen. The paper concludes that the relation to Karen as her significant other is of great significance for her to be a pattern breaker. In some way Karen replaces the neglected relationship Lisbeth had with her mother.
