This project will examine how associate professors at Roskilde University experience meaning within their work and how their processes of sensemaking are mutually dependent on the work environment. The project follows a phenomenological and hermeneutic approach based on the analysis of three different interviews and experiences of working life. In order to better understand the empirical results, we will include theories by Richard Sennett, Georg Hegel and Karl Weick. Finally, it can be concluded that there is a number of structures in the work environment which affect the professors’ sensemaking. This happens through an alienation between the professors and the more abstract elements of their work. Furthermore a lack of sensemaking occurs, through an increased number of non-academic tasks, which is described as lacking sense.
