In this thesis we investigate how the film ‘Love Commandos’ is received by members of its target group. Love Commandos is an educational film for students between the ages of 14 to 17 years. It makes extensive use of dramatic reconstruction aimed at keeping the students engaged and interested throughout the film. But the question is whether this mix of fact and fiction compromises the credibility of the film and thus undermines its potential to fulfill its educational purpose. To investigate this we made focus group interviews with students in the ninth and tenth grade and analysed their reception of the film. We, the writers of this thesis, are also the producers of the film, but we did not inform our focus groups about this. Our results indicate that the students were not capable of telling exactly which parts of the film were where the results of the film workers’ creative interpretation and which were a more direct representation of reality. But most of them did not find this to be critical to the credibility of the film. They believed that the film was conveying information credibly and that they learned something from it. Furthermore, most of them found the dramatic reconstruction to be the most interesting part of the film. This suggests that the film succeeded in its effort to engage the viewer through the use of dramatic reconstruction. Moreover the film stimulated the students to reflect on the difference between their own life and the life of the young, Indian protagonists, although they did not directly identify with them. Overall the film and its narrative style and use of reconstruction was positively received by the target group. However, a few focus group members did raise some relevant issues. First of all one focus group member felt that she was disturbed by the mix of genres in the film. For her the reconstruction resulted in a sense of confusion that overshadowed her experience of the film. Secondly two other students found the narrative to be biased against the parents of the protagonist who do not appear in the film. This can be the result of our efforts to create a simple narrative that was easy for our target group to follow and understand.
