Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

We have approached this paper with the presumption that media does not present an accurate picture of the conflicts in society. Based on the assumption that media has such a strong influence on how citizens perceive and define the society, our hypothesis speculates that they also play an important role in the dynamics of society. In order to submerge into the above mentioned, we began to investigate which íssues were on the agenda in the daily newspaper Politiken, specifically in the period leading up to the danish parliamentary election in June 2015. In addition, our focus in this paper was to analyze how articles regarding refugees and immigrants were framed in Politiken. We have conducted an in-depth quantitative content analysis of the articles in Politiken. The articles were selected via a search key based on party names in order to include as many relevant articles from the period leading up to the parliamentary election 2015. This was utilized in order to form a better picture of which issues were represented the most. This analysis has offered data, which suggests that refugees and immigrants constituted a large part of the media coverage. In order to reveal how the articles regarding refugees and immigrants were framed, we have performed another quantitative content analysis based on several analytical criterias ultimately categorizing articles as either “positive” or “negative”. We find that the results from our analysis allow us to discuss agenda based comparisons to earlier elections; the relevance of the refugee and immigrant issue, priming, and issue ownership. Furthermore, we consistently discuss the correlation between society, individuals, and institutions (media); therefore how Politikens agenda and framing can have an impact on society. As part of the paper, we wanted to reach a wide perspective in terms of theory, therefore we chose to include the theory of science. By having knowledge on this area, we carefully chose our empiricism and the way we interpreted the knowledge we received, given, that the theory involves that all knowledge is dynamic and created upon social relationship. With the addition of a scientific perspective along with the theoretical, the concepts of framing and media influences are better focused in our research.
