Studenteropgave: Fagmodulprojekt

This project focuses on the media representation of women’s football in Denmark. Through a content analysis we have investigated how much female football players and women’s football in general appears in the four most popular printed newspapers in Denmark; BT, Ekstra Bladet, Politiken and Jyllands-Posten. Our content analysis is based on a sampling period restricted into two assembled weeks during the spring of 2017. We have found that there were none articles regarding women's football in this period.
Based on the results of the content analysis we have examined why the Danish female football players are under-represented in the media. Therefore, we have found it relevant to include Rosalind Gill’s theory on media as agents of social control, Mary Jo Kane’s analysis why female athletes are under-represented in the media, and at last the Gatekeeping theory in our study. Furthermore, we have made qualitative interviews to find the reason for the media’s misrepresentation of genders in Danish football. We conclude that the main reason of the under-represented women is based on the interests of the readers and the media market.
