Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

This project seeks to examine how commercial logic and different power relations has influenced the media covering by Ekstra Bladet and BT´s on the unemployment benefit reform in 2014. We investigate which relations that influence when news media produces frontpage stories. In 19th of August, Ekstra Bladet wrote that 40.000 people were directly harmed because of the unemployment benefit reform from 2009. We examine, which meaning the word harmed has and thus the goal with the project were to observe how there can be different assumptions of a problem, depending on which rationals and logics you are working under. The project is a case studio in which Ekstra Bladet and BT´s covering of the unemployment benefit reform in 2014 is the case. We explain the development in the danish medias history and we conclude that sensational journalism became a part of the danish media world. Next we explain that the unemployment benefit law has only been changed a few times over the last decade. Then we show how the number 40.000 has been communicated in Ekstra Bladet and BT without nuance´s. Using Pierre Bourdieu's analysis on the journalistic sphere and the theories on indirect power, consciousness controlling power and power in a garbage can situation, we have described how the debate about the unemployment benefit reform is an expression of different conditions that influences the media covering. The analysis also illustrates how the understanding of the problems proportions is perspectivist and that the understanding of the number 40.000 can be interpreted in different ways, depending on your preconception to the issue. We conclude that the understanding of truthness depends on the premises that the media upholds.
