Abstrakt

This project concerns the formation of moral panic in the modern mediated society. As theoretical framework we apply Kenneth Thompsons conceptualisation of moral panic, as well as Norman Faircloughs critical discourse analysis. The case of Lazy Robert is used in order to illustrate the medias role in generating outbreaks of moral panic in the Danish society. In our analysis, we study two selected articles concerning the case, using the Norman Faircloughs critical discourse analysis. Moreover, we account for specific components in the formation of moral panic in more general context of the case. To conclude, we are able to establish that moral panic can have both positive and negative consequences for the overall enlightenment and understanding of subjects in society, as reproduced by the media. However, a critical reflection upon the communication of the media is to be encouraged.
