Abstract In this master thesis the central question is how the French libertine writer Marquis de Sade has affected critical, philosophical think-ing. By investigating philosophical works that include discussions of Sade’s novels, the thesis explains how the literature of Sade in-spires and contributes to critical thinking and has created new un-derstandings of concepts. The thesis does so by mainly analyzing the role of Sade’s authorship in Dialectic of Enlightenment by The-odor W. Adorno & Max Horkheimer and Sacher-Masoch and mas-ochism by Gilles Deleuze. The thesis concludes that Sade’s work becomes a crucial precondition for Adorno & Horkheimer’s philo-sophical critique of their concept of the enlightenment. Sade’s lit-erature both enables Adorno & Horkheimer to point out barbaric content of the enlightenment and enables the enlightenment to be self-critical. The thesis also concludes that the characters of Sade’s novels enable Deleuze to criticize the psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud and offer another understanding of the inner psychic life than Freud suggests. Finally, the thesis investigates how Sade contrib-utes to philosophical discussions about the understanding of con-cepts such as thinking, reason, instincts and desire.
