Studenteropgave: Kandidatprojekt

This semester project has been made by; Nanna Kirk, Sofie Lund, Signe Wildenskov and Jonas Øllegaard as part of the course; Health Promotion and Health Strategies at the University of Roskilde in 2017. The aim of the project is to clarify which perceptions of health exists amongst 25-35 year old Danish people. Furthermore we want to understand how the individual understand health, and what the consequences from a biomedical understanding of health are for the individual in a health-promoting context. The project operates with mixed methods. A survey contributes with quantitative data regarding health perception and sources that influence this. Two qualitative semi- structured interviews contribute with a deeper understanding of the health perception and what affects this. The theoretical point of view is inspired by critical realism and critical theory.
Through analysis we find that health is understood differently depending on the context. In addition it demonstrates that the majority of the 25-35 year old perceives health in a broad perspective. Mental health and well-being are found to be essential to health, and physical health can be one of many ways to achieve this. The discussion gives insight in how the ideals of health raised by the society affects the perception of health. The individual must possess a certain degree of critical mind, to avoid too much influence by the ideal determined by the society. Furthermore it shows that family and friends influences the fundamental perception of health, whereas experts and media contribute with more factual knowledge.
The conclusion is, that the majority has a broad perception of health. However it is essential to understand that the term “health” depends on the context, and depends on the individual’s fundamental values and degree of critical mind. The societal discourse of health has a great influence on unconscious levels why the biomedical discourse in society can make unfavourable settings for health promotion.
