Studenteropgave: Semesterprojekt

In the following assignment we have studied how it may be problematic when people with a signifi-cant, political background hold the position as the executive editor at a bigger newspaper. Our re-search question is as follows: “What influence does the administrating executive editor have on the agenda at Danish newspapers, and how can this be problematized in Hans Engells case as the ad-ministrating executive editor at Ekstra Bladet from 2000-2007?” In order to answer this question we have analyzed the editorial power-structure at Ekstra Bladet and Politiken. In the analysis we will include time limited journalists and their role in the power rela-tions between executive editors and journalists. In the analysis we have concluded that the adminis-trating executive editors possess a significant power when it comes to the editorial line. Based on the collected empirical data we have shaped a descriptive analysis of Hans Engell as a person. In continuation we have analyzed Engells actions at the journalistic field on basis of his political past. Engells role in the treatment of the Dan Lynge case at Ekstra Bladet and his way of dealing with former party members have been included as well. The analysis is based on the thoughts of Pierre Bourdieu, specifically on field, habitus and capital. On the basis of the analysis we conclude that the concepts of Bourdieu can be used to explain how it has been problematic for Hans Engell to assume the role as the administrating executive editor with his political past. This par t of the analysis also concludes that there might be a more general problem that differs from the unique case of Hans Engell. Finally the analysis treats the possible presence of a democratic breach. For this we have included the thesis of Robert Dahl about the healthy democracy as well as Stig Hjarvart and Mi-chael Parentis thesis’s regarding the power of the news media. Because of our exemplification of the administrative executive editor power regarding the editorial line and therefore parts of the de-mocracy, we conclude that the power can have a negative influence on the democracy, if the execu-tive editor makes choices based on a political past.
