Studenteropgave: Basisprojekt

This project is centered around the question of how significant structural relations in the film industry, with an emphasis on sexual harassment, can be grasped through a perspective aimed at power, status and gender. The purpose of this project is to identify gendered power relations of the industry. We want to examine how these structures are of relevance to the employees within the film industry and to which extent the sexual harassment, especially in Hollywood, are being carried out. Furthermore, we pursue to understand why these sexual violations occur in a large scale, in this specific field. In order to get a nuanced picture of how and why these structures exist as well as what sustains them, we use Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical aspects of power and masculinity. In addition, we have utilized Dorte Marie Søndergaard, professor in social psychology, explorations of gender as a social and discursive construct. Furthermore Kenneth Reinicke, lecturer in men, has given us an insight in the #MeToo-movement, sexual harassment and men’s role in this matter. Our chosen theoretical point of view has provided us with a comprehensive knowledge of the examined subject, sexual harassment in the film indus-try. The project contains an analysis of the documentary Untouchable (2019), which presents and portrays the Weinstein-case, the stories of some of his victims and statements from his former associates. In addition, the article Sexual Harassment in the Creative Industries: Toler-ance, Culture and the Need for Change is used to underline and validate important analytical aspects. The analysis has provided an insight into which perceptions of masculinity and femi-ninity prevails in the film industry. The feminine is overall diminished and sexualized, whereas the masculine is dominant and prestigious. In conclusion, we have observed that the film indus-try endorses and promotes a certain behavior and characteristics. Additionally, we have identi-fied certain power structures in the film industry that maintain specific gender roles. The indus-try culture can consequently be difficult to navigate in for numerous people, especially female aspiring actresses.
